San Juan de los Terreros Fort
Spain, Spain
San Juan de los Terreros Fort, also known as Batería de San Juan de los Terreros, is an 18th-century horseshoe-shaped coastal artillery battery built between 1761 and 1764 under King Carlos III on a hill overlooking Pulpí municipality in Almería province, Andalusia, Spain, designed by Thomas de Warluzel d'Hostel and completed by Antonio Duce Oliveros at a cost of 110,000 reales. Replacing an earlier 1578 watchtower damaged by an English warship in 1743, it housed 13 urban militia soldiers, an officer, capellán, and artillery personnel to defend against relentless Berber pirate raids, featuring sloped walls, semicircular bastions, a drawbridge-accessed portón bearing Carlos III's escudo and construction date, and vaulted chambers for cannon fire coordination. Abandoned around 1870 after serving briefly as Guardia Civil quarters post-Civil War, it was restored in 1980 and definitively in 2001 by Pulpí town hall, now functioning as the Centro de Interpretación del Litoral Andaluz and Geoda de Pulpí museum with sweeping coastal views toward Águilas and Isla de Terreros.
