San Telmo is Buenos Aires’ oldest and most historic neighborhood, dating back to the 17th century, and is celebrated for its cobblestone streets, colonial-era buildings with wrought-iron balconies, bohemian atmosphere, and deep roots in tango culture.

The neighborhood features Plaza Dorrego, a leafy square surrounded by cafés and bars where impromptu tango dancers perform daily and an enormous antiques and handicraft flea market takes place every Sunday, while nearby Defensa Street hosts another vibrant open-air market filled with vintage items, street performers, and food stalls.

Visitors can explore unique attractions like La Casa Mínima, the narrowest house in Buenos Aires at just 8.2 feet wide, the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Art (MAMBA) featuring works by Kandinsky, the National Historical Museum with artifacts from Argentina’s independence wars, and the charming Parque Lezama with its sculpture garden.

After the yellow cholera outbreak in 1871 drove aristocrats north, San Telmo became home to European immigrants, artists, and freethinkers, creating its current multicultural, artistic vibe that was further revived through gentrification in the 1990s, transforming it into a trendy destination with traditional steakhouses (parrillas), craft beer pubs, modern art galleries, and antique shops.
