Sandford Castle, also known as Mount Sandford Castle, is a picturesque Gothic folly located near Inistioge in County Kilkenny. Built in the late 18th century, it was designed as an ornamental structure rather than a defensive fortress and was positioned to frame spectacular views of the River Nore, Inistioge Bridge, and the surrounding countryside. Constructed from rubble stone in a romantic Gothic style, the castle was part of the Woodstock Estate and served as a scenic viewpoint within the landscaped grounds. Its large Gothic window became a distinctive feature, creating what has been described as a “room with a view” overlooking the valley below. Today, Sandford Castle remains a charming historic landmark hidden among woodland near Inistioge. Although relatively small in scale, its striking architecture, beautiful setting, and connection to the historic Woodstock Estate make it a popular attraction for visitors exploring County Kilkenny’s heritage and landscapes.
