Šášovský hrad
Žiar nad Hronom, Slovakia, Slovakia
Šášovský hrad near Žiar nad Hronom in central Slovakia is a 13th-century Gothic castle perched on a high cliff above the Hron River's left bank in the Štiavnické vrchy mountains, built around 1253 by brothers Peter and Vincent Vanchovci, relatives of the Archbishop of Esztergom, to guard trade routes and access to mining areas like Banská Štiavnica alongside nearby Revište Castle. Measuring 75 meters long and 16 meters wide with a cylindrical entrance tower and eastern palace, it underwent major 15th-century expansions amid the boom in precious metal mining in Kremnica and Banská Štiavnica, frequently changing owners through Gothic and Renaissance eras before rebels under Imrich Thököly plundered it in 1677, leading to its abandonment and decay. Its striking ruins remain a prominent hiking landmark with panoramic views today.
