Šomoška Castle
Šiatorská Bukovinka, Slovakia, Slovakia
Šomoška Castle ruins are located in Šiatorská Bukovinka in Slovakia's Banská Bystrica Region, built before 1291 by Peter of the Kacsics family on a basalt hill as a border fortress in the Cerová vrchovina Protected Landscape Area. It changed hands to Matthew Csák in 1310, then the Szécsényi family until 1461 and Losonci owners, withstanding Turkish attacks in the 1550s through its steep terrain before occupation from 1573 to 1593, later fortified in 1618 and 1647–1655. Destroyed by imperial forces in 1709 during Rákóczi's anti-Habsburg uprising, the Gothic-Renaissance remnants—including cannon towers and a cistern—underwent conservation in the 1970s and renovations in 2025, popular for hikes near the Hungarian border.
