Topoľčany castle
Podhradie, Topoľčany District, Slovakia, Slovakia
Topoľčany Castle near Podhradie in Slovakia's Topoľčany District was built in the late 13th or early 14th century, likely by powerful magnate Matthew Csák, as a royal fortress on a rocky ridge overlooking the Ponitrie region and Nitra River valley. It served as a defensive stronghold against Hussite raids in the 15th century and Turkish threats later, changing hands among noble families like the Széchényi, Országh, and Forgách who expanded it with outer wards, towers, bastions, and gates amid frequent sieges. Damaged during the 1711 Rákóczi uprising when imperial forces confiscated it, the castle fell into decay by the late 18th century, leaving romantic ruins with a preserved prismatic tower now hosting exhibits on its history.
