Shanganagh Castle is a historic castle and estate located in the Shankill area of south Dublin, Ireland. The site has medieval origins, with an earlier castle believed to have been built by the Lawless family in the early 15th century. Parts of the original structure survived for centuries before being damaged by fire, and later buildings were constructed on or near the same site. The present castle largely reflects later rebuilding and remodeling, particularly during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when it was transformed into a striking Gothic-style residence featuring battlements and turrets. Over the years, Shanganagh Castle has served a variety of purposes, including use as an educational institution and later as an open prison. Following periods of vacancy and deterioration, the property came under the ownership of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, which has explored plans for its preservation and reuse. Today, Shanganagh Castle is recognized as an important part of Dublin’s architectural and cultural heritage, reflecting both its medieval roots and its later transformation into a distinctive castellated country house.
