The Shrine of Prophet Jonah (Nabi Yunus) in Mosul, Nineveh Governorate, is one of Iraq’s most significant religious and historical sites. It was traditionally believed to contain the tomb of the prophet Jonah, known as Yunus in Islam, and for centuries attracted pilgrims from different faiths. The shrine stood on a prominent hill within the ancient city of Nineveh and served as an important symbol of Mosul’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The mosque and shrine complex dated back to the medieval period and was built over an even older religious site. In July 2014, it was destroyed by ISIS, causing the loss of a landmark treasured by local communities and visitors alike. After the site was liberated, archaeologists discovered remarkable remains of a Neo-Assyrian palace beneath the shrine, revealing new insights into the ancient history of Nineveh. Reconstruction efforts have since worked to restore the mosque, preserving both its religious importance and its connection to Iraq’s rich archaeological heritage.
