Shrule Castle is a well-preserved tower house located near the River Barrow in County Laois. Built in the late 16th century by Robert Hartpole during the Plantation period, it served as the seat of the Hartpole family and reflects the turbulent history of English settlement in the region. The castle is a substantial limestone structure with four storeys, a spiral staircase, vaulted chambers, fireplaces, and defensive features such as a murder hole and drawbar-secured doorways. Over time it evolved from a fortified residence into a more comfortable family home, with later additions and modifications made during the 18th century. Today, Shrule Castle remains one of County Laois’s most notable historic buildings. Despite signs of age and structural wear, its surviving architectural details and strong connection to the Plantation era make it an important example of Ireland’s late medieval castle heritage.
