Shwedagon Pagoda
Yangon, Yangon Region, Myanmar
The Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, Myanmar, is considered the most sacred Buddhist site in the country and is believed to contain relics of four previous Buddhas, including eight strands of hair from Gautama Buddha. Legend dates its founding over 2,500 years ago, making it one of the oldest Buddhist stupas in the world, though historical evidence places its construction more likely between the 6th and 10th centuries AD by the Mon people.
The pagoda stands about 99 meters tall and is covered in gold plates, topped with a diamond-studded crown umbrella. Over centuries, it has been expanded and renovated by various rulers, including Queen Shin Sawbu who famously donated her weight in gold for its gilding.
The site occupies nearly 50 hectares with numerous shrines, assembly halls, and stairways, serving as both a religious center and a symbol of Burmese national identity and resistance. It is not only a place of pilgrimage but also an iconic architectural marvel that holds deep spiritual and cultural significance in Myanmar.
