Sittwe
Rakhine State, Myanmar
Sittwe is the capital of Rakhine State in Myanmar, located on an estuarial island at the mouth of the Kaladan River along the Bay of Bengal.
Historically a small fishing village, it rapidly grew after the British annexation of Arakan in 1826, becoming the region's administrative center and a key port for coastal and international trade. Sittwe is rich in cultural heritage, combining Buddhist, Muslim, and colonial influences, and is known for its ancient stupas believed to hold relics of Buddha. The city endured heavy damage during World War II and is an important historical and strategic site in Myanmar.
Today, it remains a vital port and a focal point of regional political and humanitarian issues, including a large population of Rohingya refugees. Sittwe also serves as a gateway to the ancient Rakhine kingdom's capital, Mrauk-U, famous for its archaeological and religious monuments.
