Smolenskaya Krepostnaya Stena
Smolensk, Russia, Russia
Smolenskaya Krepostnaya Stena, known as the Smolensk Fortress Wall or Smolensk Kremlin walls, is a massive 16th-century defensive structure encircling the city of Smolensk, Russia, built from 1595 to 1602 under Tsars Fyodor I and Boris Godunov by architect Fyodor Kon to protect Russia's western frontier.
Stretching 6.5 kilometers with walls up to 19 meters high and 6 meters thick, it featured 38 towers (22-33 meters tall) equipped with three tiers of loopholes for artillery and infantry, vaulted casemates, and strategic overlooks, representing Russia's most advanced fortress at the time.
Enduring sieges including Napoleon's 1812 bombardment and mining (destroying 9 towers), less than half survives today as a federally protected architectural monument symbolizing Smolensk's enduring role as a defensive gateway.
