Smolny Cathedral

St. Petersburg, Russia

---

The Smolny Cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia, is one of the finest examples of Russian Baroque architecture and is widely regarded as a masterpiece of the Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

Its striking blue-and-white façade, elegant domes, and richly decorated design make it one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Construction began in 1748 under Empress Elizabeth, who intended the cathedral to be the centerpiece of a convent. Although the main structure was largely completed during her reign, the project was delayed after her death and was finally finished in 1835 with interiors designed to suit the architectural tastes of the time.

Located on the banks of the Neva River, the cathedral combines historical significance with remarkable beauty. After periods of closure and alternative uses during the Soviet era, it was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and today serves both as an active place of worship and one of St. Petersburg’s most admired cultural and architectural attractions.
