Verified Snogeholm Castle

Sövde, Sweden, Sweden

Snogeholm Castle, situated near Sövde in Sjöbo Municipality, Skåne, Sweden, on the eastern shore of Lake Snogeholmssjön, evolved from a medieval wooden fortress called Heireholm on Hägerholmen island, owned by the Archbishop of Lund until a 16th-century fire led to its replacement by a farmstead.

In the late 17th century, Christian Bille expanded it into a castle-like structure with wings, but the present French Baroque-inspired building with a two-story main block and three three-story towers was constructed in the 1870s by Erik Claes Piper, featuring detached wings amid expansive estate grounds.

Once a grand agricultural hub that hosted German Emperor Wilhelm II for hunts in 1899 and 1902, the privately owned site now forms part of a nature reserve with hiking trails, ancient trees, and historical remnants, emphasizing its romantic 19th-century legacy without public castle access.
