Srah Castle is a late 16th-century tower house located near Tullamore in County Offaly, on the banks of the Grand Canal. It was built in 1588 by John Briscoe, an English settler, and was designed primarily for defense, featuring gun loops, battlements, a machicolation above the entrance, and projecting corner turrets known as bartizans. Rising to about 20 metres (65 feet) and four storeys high, the castle is a notable example of an Elizabethan fortified residence in Ireland. It suffered significant damage during the Cromwellian campaigns of the mid-17th century, leaving much of the interior in ruins, although some original features such as a fireplace, garderobe, and parts of the spiral staircase can still be seen. Today, Srah Castle stands as an atmospheric ruin surrounded by countryside and canal-side walks. Despite its weathered condition, it remains an important local landmark and a striking reminder of Ireland’s turbulent history and fortified architecture.
