Staigue Stone Fort

Republic of Ireland, Ireland

Staigue Stone Fort is one of Ireland’s finest and best-preserved ancient stone forts, located on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry. Built during the late Iron Age, probably between about 300 BCE and 400 CE, it served as a stronghold for a local chieftain and may also have had ceremonial or community functions. The fort is famous for its impressive dry-stone construction, built without mortar, with walls reaching up to 5.5 metres high and 4 metres thick. Inside are stone stairways, passages, terraces, and hidden chambers, showcasing the remarkable engineering skills of its builders. Set in a remote valley surrounded by hills, Staigue Stone Fort remains a protected National Monument and one of County Kerry’s most important archaeological sites. Its excellent state of preservation offers visitors a rare and fascinating glimpse into life in ancient Ireland.
