State Chateau Benešov Nad Ploučnicí
Benešov Nad Ploučnicí, Czech Republic (Czechia)
State Chateau Benešov nad Ploučnicí in the Czech Republic is a distinctive example of northern Renaissance architecture with Gothic influences, originally dating back to the 16th century. The estate comprises two main parts, the upper and lower chateaux, built by the Salhausen family from Meissen who owned the estate during its peak prosperity.
The upper chateau was constructed between 1522 and 1524, while the lower chateau was built between 1540 and 1544 for the Salhausen heirs, later extended with the addition of the Wolf's House in 1578. These buildings are connected by a covered corridor that once linked them to the town church.
Over time, ownership changed, especially after the Thirty Years’ War, with the upper chateau held by the Thun family until 1926 and the lower chateau passing to the emperor and subsequently to other noble families. The chateau complex retains much of its original Renaissance character due to limited modern renovations since it served primarily as a secondary residence and administrative center.
Today, it stands as a well-preserved historical monument hosting exhibitions of period furnishings, porcelain, and weapons, reflecting the lifestyle of Renaissance nobility.
