Queen Dowager Hedvig Eleonora commissioned its Baroque reconstruction from 1669-1674 under architect Nicodemus Tessin the Elder, featuring a central building with four square corner towers, a dominant park-side tower, and surrounding service structures amid French-style gardens.
Used as a royal summer retreat by queens including Sofia Magdalena, whose neoclassical interiors by Carl F. Adelcrantz endure, it later became a renowned equestrian center hosting horse shows and now offers public tours of its preserved halls and chapel.
