Svartsjo Castle
Svartsjö, Sweden, Sweden
Svartsjö Castle, situated on the island of Färingsö in Lake Mälaren near Svartsjö, Sweden, began as a 14th-century stone house that evolved into a Renaissance palace under Gustav Vasa and his sons, completed around 1580 before burning in 1687 with remnants repurposed for Stockholm's Tre Kronor.
The present Rococo structure arose in 1734-1739 as a hunting palace for Queen Ulrika Eleonora, designed by Carl Hårleman with French influences that shaped Swedish country estates, later gifted to Louisa Ulrika until its abandonment post-1782.
Converted into a prison from 1891 to 1966 exploiting local granite quarries, it underwent state restoration by 2003 and now operates as a conference venue, banquet hall, and café amid preserved gardens.
