Taaffe’s Castle is a well-preserved 16th-century fortified townhouse in the medieval town of Carlingford, County Louth. Built around 1520 by the wealthy Taaffe family, it served as both a residence and a trading depot during a period when Carlingford was one of Ireland’s most important commercial ports. Located close to the old harbour, the four-storey tower house reflects the prosperity of Carlingford’s merchant community. Its defensive features, including a spiral staircase, machicolation, and thick stone walls, demonstrate how merchants protected their goods and families in turbulent times. The castle is associated with the influential Taaffe family, who later became Earls of Carlingford. Today, it remains one of the town’s most recognizable medieval landmarks, helping to illustrate Carlingford’s rich trading history and architectural heritage.
