Taman Mini Indonesia Indah
Jakarta, Indonesia
Taman Mini Indonesia Indah (TMII), or “Beautiful Indonesia Miniature Park,” is a cultural wonderland in East Jakarta that offers a vibrant, immersive snapshot of the nation’s rich diversity. Spanning nearly 150 hectares, this sprawling park was envisioned by First Lady Siti Hartinah (Tien Suharto) and inaugurated in 1975 as a way to foster national pride by showcasing the traditions, architecture, and daily life of Indonesia’s many provinces.
At the heart of TMII is a lake with miniature islands shaped like the Indonesian archipelago, best viewed from the park’s iconic cable cars. Surrounding the lake are 33 provincial pavilions, each featuring traditional houses (rumah adat), costumes, crafts, and cultural performances that reflect the unique identity of each region—from the Minangkabau’s curved rooftops to the Torajan tongkonan and Balinese split gates.
But TMII is more than just a cultural showcase. It’s also home to:
- Museums: Covering everything from Indonesian stamps and transportation to Komodo dragons and traditional weapons.
- Gardens and Parks: Including orchid, cactus, and medicinal herb gardens, plus a bird park and reptile center.
- Religious Harmony: Seven houses of worship representing Indonesia’s major religions stand side by side, symbolizing unity in diversity.
- Theaters and Attractions: The Keong Emas IMAX Theater, the Theater of My Homeland, and the new multimedia fountain show “Tirta Cerita” bring folklore and history to life with music, lights, and drone displays.
Following a major revitalization completed in 2023, TMII now features more green space, eco-friendly transport options, and upgraded facilities, making it not just a cultural park but a model for sustainable tourism.
