Tatra National Park (TANAP), located in northern Slovakia, is the country’s oldest national park, established in 1949 to protect the spectacular Tatra Mountains. The park includes much of the High Tatras, featuring rugged peaks, glacial lakes, waterfalls, and alpine valleys, including Gerlachovský štít, the highest mountain in Slovakia. The park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is home to rare wildlife such as the Tatra chamois, brown bears, lynxes, wolves, and marmots. Together with the adjacent protected area in Poland, it forms a cross-border UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognized for its outstanding natural value. A popular destination for hiking, mountaineering, skiing, and nature tourism, Tatra National Park offers some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery in Central Europe and is considered one of Slovakia’s greatest natural treasures.
