Verified Terekeka

North of Juba, Central Equatoria, South Sudan

Terekeka is a town and county located on the northern edge of Central Equatoria State in South Sudan, about 53 miles north of Juba, set along the western bank of the Nile River.

Known as the capital of the Mundari people, Terekeka features a landscape of low-lying swamps and hills, with Lake Madi to the west. The town’s name is derived from local terms referring to hard shrubs and open ground.

The population mostly relies on cattle rearing, agriculture, and fishing, with major crops including sorghum, maize, sesame, and beans, while fishing is common due to proximity to the Nile and serves local markets such as Juba. Economic activities face challenges from insecurity along trade routes and the wider financial crisis in South Sudan, making subsistence farming prevalent.

Terekeka has experienced impacts from dry spells because of its sandy soil and limited water resources, leading residents to forage for wild foods in difficult times. It is also an administrative center, becoming a diocese of the Episcopal Church of Sudan in 2009, and is characterized by its rural, agro-pastoral lifestyle and occasional clashes over land and water access with neighboring groups.
