Tetovo Fortress Kale
Republic of Macedonia, North Macedonia
Tetovo Fortress Kale, also known as Baltepe Fortress or Тетовско Кале, is a 19th-century Ottoman fortress perched on Baltepe hill overlooking Tetovo in northwestern North Macedonia at about 806 meters above sea level. Built starting in 1820 by Abdurrahman Pasha on the site of a medieval monastery dedicated to Saint Athanasius, it included defensive walls, towers, a guest house, dungeon, kitchens, dining hall, and a fountain, with three underground tunnels leading to the city center, upper Tetovo, and the village of Lavce. Archaeological layers reveal earlier Hellenistic, late antique, and medieval fortifications possibly linked to the ancient town of Oeneum mentioned by Livy, though the main structure fell into ruin after Pasha's 1843 exile; restoration efforts from 2008-2019 preserved walls and reconstructed the church.
