The Cactus Garden
Guatiza, Spain
The Cactus Garden in Guatiza, Spain, officially known as Jardín de Cactus, was created in 1991 as the last major project of artist César Manrique. It is situated in an old volcanic ash quarry that was previously used for agriculture and later became a landfill.
The garden features around 4,500 specimens representing approximately 450 species of cacti and succulents from North and South America, Madagascar, and other arid regions around the world. Arranged in terraces resembling a large amphitheater, the garden integrates natural volcanic stone with artistic and architectural elements, including a restored windmill once used to grind grain.
The garden is celebrated for its vibrant mix of shapes, textures, and colors, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage on the island of Lanzarote, making it one of the most important cactus gardens globally.
