The Castle of Porto Palermo
Albania, Albania
The Castle of Porto Palermo, also known as Kalaja e Porto Palermos or Ali Pasha Castle, is a small but striking Ottoman fortress on a narrow peninsula in the bay of Porto Palermo along the Albanian Riviera, near the town of Himarë in southern Albania.
Built in the early 19th century by the powerful local ruler Ali Pasha of Tepelena, it has a compact triangular layout with three bastions, thick stone walls, and an inner courtyard, designed to guard the entrance of the bay and control coastal movement along the Ionian Sea.
The castle was used both as a defensive garrison and a residence, and today it is one of the best‑preserved coastal fortifications from Ali Pasha’s era, open to visitors who can walk through its archways, climb to its terraces, and enjoy dramatic sea views, making it a popular stop for road‑trippers and travelers exploring the southern Albanian coast.
