The Mint is a remarkable 15th or 16th-century fortified town house located in the medieval town of Carlingford, County Louth. It is one of the town’s best-preserved historic buildings and is protected as a National Monument. Its name comes from a royal licence granted to Carlingford in 1467 allowing the town to mint coins, although historians are unsure whether the building itself was ever actually used for coin production. It may instead have served as the home and business premises of a wealthy merchant family during Carlingford’s prosperous trading era. The Mint is known for its strong defensive features, including battlements, loopholes, and a protected entrance, as well as its beautifully carved limestone windows decorated with figures, animals, and Celtic designs. Today, it stands as a fascinating reminder of Carlingford’s medieval commercial importance and rich architectural heritage.
