Its rugged double-ring walls of local granite stretch 450 meters along rocky ridges, with 16 towers offering sweeping Atlantic views, cisterns for sieges, silos, and gates like the dramatic Porta da Traição amid Neolithic-era foundations.
Conquered by Afonso Henriques in 1147, abandoned after the 1755 earthquake, and romantically restored by King Ferdinand II in the 19th century, it now stands as a UNESCO-listed ruin blending nature and military architecture.
