The Moor’s Chair (Saint Helen's Castle)
Granada, Spain, Spain
The Moor's Chair, also known as Saint Helen's Castle or Silla del Moro, is a 13th-14th century Nasrid fortress overlooking Granada, Spain, built as a military outpost guarding the Generalife and Alhambra's water supply against Christian threats during Granada's final frontier era. Perched above the Albayzín with mysterious underground galleries of unknown purpose, it suffered damage during the Reconquista and later Christian repurposing before 20th-century restoration by architect Torres Balbás revealed access stairs and a strategic main tower. Legend ties it to the last Nasrid king Boabdil's contemplative retreat, though its true role was defensive; today it offers free panoramic city views via a steep climb.
