The St. George's (Yuriev) Monastery in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, stands 5 km south of the city on the Volkhov River as Russia's oldest monastery, traditionally founded around 1030 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise (baptized George) and reliably documented from 1119 when Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich commissioned its stone centerpiece, St. George's Cathedral, built by master Peter.

 This robust 12th-century church, serving as an archimandrite and princely mausoleum, features ancient frescoes including Christ Pantocrator and portraits of Vsevolod and Archbishop Feoktist, later expanded in the 19th century under Archimandrite Photius with additions like Spassky Cathedral, Holy Cross Church, and Carlo Rossi's distinctive 52-meter four-tiered bell tower.

A key spiritual and economic powerhouse of the medieval Novgorod Republic and UNESCO site, it blends Romanesque architecture with later Baroque elements amid active monastic life today.
