Tidö Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Tidö Castle, situated near Lake Mälaren outside Västerås in Västmanland, Sweden, originated from a medieval house built by the Gren family in the 15th century and was sold to the Bååt family in 1537 before statesman Axel Oxenstierna commissioned its reconstruction between 1625 and 1641 in strict Dutch Renaissance style.
Designed by architects Simon de la Vallée and Nicodemus Tessin the Elder around a rectangular courtyard with a northern main building and three linked wings, it boasts preserved features like the Knights' Hall, intricate inlaid doors, and original interiors reflecting Sweden's Great Power era.
Privately owned and open for summer guided tours, the robust structure offers a rustic glimpse into noble history amid scenic grounds, distinct from more glamorous palaces.
