Tinnakill Castle

Tinnakill Castle is a late medieval tower house in County Laois, situated between Mountmellick and Portarlington. Built in the late 16th or early 17th century, it is a substantial four-storey limestone structure with thick defensive walls, vaulted chambers, stairways built into the walls, and other features typical of Irish fortified residences of the period. The castle is closely associated with the MacDonnell family, a Scottish-descended clan who settled in the area during the Plantation era and held the property for much of its history. Historical records suggest the castle played a role in the political and military upheavals of the 16th and 17th centuries. Although now a ruin, Tinnakill Castle remains an impressive landmark and an important example of County Laois’s medieval heritage. It is also remembered for its connection to a rare Sheela-na-gig carving that was once associated with the site.
