Tjolöholm Castle
Asserlund, Sweden, Sweden
Tjolöholm Castle, located near Asserlund in Kungsbacka Municipality, Halland, Sweden, traces its estate origins to the 13th century in Danish King Valdemar's land registry and was acquired in 1892 by wealthy industrialist James Fredrik Dickson and his wife Blanche, who commissioned its construction between 1898 and 1904.
Designed by young architect Lars Israel Wahlman in Tudor style blended with Art Nouveau, the castle features intricate handicraft, Elizabethan facades, modern amenities like central heating and electricity, and a self-contained village including a church and workers' quarters, completed after James's untimely death from blood poisoning.
Passed to their daughter Blanche Bonde, it fell into disrepair by the mid-20th century before county ownership restored it as a museum, event venue, and music festival site amid expansive parks and a once-grand stud farm.
