Torija Castle
Torija, Spain, Spain
The Castillo de Torija is a well-preserved 15th-century medieval fortress in the village of Torija, Guadalajara province, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain, originally constructed by the Knights Templar atop earlier Roman fortifications to guard key inland routes.
Featuring a rectangular limestone structure with three circular corner towers, a prominent square keep tower, crenellated battlements, and a central courtyard well, it withstood sieges including capture by Navarrese forces in 1445 before passing to Cardinal Mendoza and later French occupation under General Hugo during the Peninsular War.
Destroyed by Spanish guerrillas led by El Empecinado and restored in 1962, it now houses the Centro de Interpretación Turística de Guadalajara, showcasing regional history through exhibits on La Alcarria and Nobel laureate Camilo José Cela.
