Torpa Stenhus
Hovsnäs, Sweden, Sweden
Torpa Stenhus, near Hovsnäs by Lake Åsunden in Västra Götaland, Sweden, is a well-preserved 15th-century stone castle built around 1470 by privy councillor Arvid Knutsson (or Trolle) as a fortress against Danish incursions.
Expanded in the 16th century with a staircase tower and Renaissance interiors featuring grisaille paintings, it gained royal ties as the home of Catherine Stenbock, third wife of King Gustav Vasa, and later hosted noble families like the Stenbocks amid a 17th-century Baroque chapel.
Privately owned today, the structure offers guided tours of its historic rooms, gardens, and church, showcasing original wooden walls restored after 19th-century granary use.
