Torre-campanario de la Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba
Córdoba, Spain, Spain
Torre-campanario de la Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba is the 93-meter bell tower dominating Córdoba's skyline, originally built as an Islamic minaret during Abd al-Rahman III's 10th-century caliphal expansion of the Great Mosque.
After the 1236 Christian conquest, the minaret was repurposed as a campanario with added bells by the 14th century, suffering damage from storms and earthquakes before major 16th-century Renaissance reconstruction by Hernán Ruiz III starting in 1593, which encased the original structure in a new brick-and-stone tower featuring serlianas, a clock body, and decorative lanterns up to a San Rafael statue.
Further restorations followed 18th-century disasters like the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, preserving layered Islamic and Christian architecture that visitors can climb for panoramic city views today.
