Torre da Lanzada
Spain, Spain
Torre da Lanzada is the evocative ruin of a 10th-century medieval watchtower-castle near Sanxenxo in Galicia's Ría de Arousa, Spain, built around 960 by Bishop Sisnando II of Iria Flavia atop possible ancient Phoenician or Roman lighthouse foundations.
Designed as an advance outpost for the Archbishopric of Santiago de Compostela, it defended against Viking and later Saracen pirate raids by signaling threats via smoke or fire to nearby fortresses like Torres do Oeste in Catoira and Torre de San Sadurniño, enduring sieges including Moorish attacks in 1121 and Irmandiño revolts in 1467.
Today, the preserved stone tower stands beside the Romanesque Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Lanzada amid the stunning Praia da Lanzada dunes, symbolizing Galicia's turbulent coastal defenses and attracting visitors to its archaeological and scenic allure.
