Torre de Almofala
Portugal, Spain
The Torre de Almofala is a Roman-origin tower in the village of Almofala, Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo municipality, Guarda district, east-central Portugal near the Spanish border along the Águeda River.
Originally a rectangular Roman temple later adapted into a 10th-century Romanesque watchtower by Aguiar monks—after the region was donated by León's king—it formed part of early medieval defenses amid a site with confirmed Roman city remains and Arabic-named "camp" (Almofala).
Archaeological excavations since 1997 revealed dedicatory inscriptions and ruins, now showcased in an interpretation center highlighting its layered history from antiquity through monastic use to modern heritage preservation.
