Torre de Celas (Torre de Vinseira)
Spain, Spain
Torre de Celas, also known as Torre de Vinseira or Torre de Celas de Peiro, is the main surviving remnant of a medieval fortress in Celas parish, Culleredo municipality, A Coruña province, Galicia, northwestern Spain.
Documented since 1395 and linked to the powerful Andrade family whose coat of arms adorns its facade - this square granite tower (8x8 meters base, 12 meters tall) served as a military stronghold on the A Coruña-Santiago route, charging tolls until disputes with the city led to removal of defensive features like battlements.
Destroyed in the Irmandiño revolts and later rebuilt, it once adjoined a pazo manor house (now gone), was restored in 1992 as a museum space until 2011, and today stands protected amid a park with nearby Romanesque church ruins, offering valley views.
