Torre de la Atalaya de Níjar
Níjar, Spain, Spain
Torre de la Atalaya de Níjar is a 13th-century circular stone watchtower, the sole well-preserved remnant of an ancient Arab fortress overlooking the town of Níjar in Almería province, Andalusia, Spain.
Elevated for panoramic surveillance, it features a wider base, narrow loopholes including a southern window, an interior chamber at 4.2 meters with a hemispherical vault, chimney, and ladder access via a northern hatch, used to signal threats like Berber corsairs to the alcazaba of Almería and Castillo de Huebro using daytime smoke or nighttime fires.
Captured by Castilians in 1488 during the Reconquista, integrated into 18th-century coastal defenses under Carlos III with militia response, it fell into ruin before recent restorations made it publicly accessible amid visible muralla fragments.
