One prominent example near Elda in Alicante province dates to the late 14th century, constructed on a strategic mountain pass to guard the border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile against raids, with restorations in 2011 revealing its original formwork marks and annex structures. Another stands in Villena as Atalaya Castle, a robust 12th-century Islamic fortress with concentric walls and a keep that withstood sieges before becoming a cultural monument. 

These towers, often linked to medieval conflicts and later wars, highlight Spain's layered defensive architecture amid varied landscapes from coastal hills to inland sierras.
