Torre de la Rijana
Spain, Spain
Torre de la Rijana is a 16th-century coastal watchtower overlooking Cala de la Rijana beach in Gualchos-Castell de Ferro, Granada province, Spain, constructed around 1559 as part of the defensive chain against Berber pirates raiding the Costa Tropical.
Built atop a 10th-11th century Muslim rectangular tower with earlier Roman water point and 14th-15th century Nasrid baluarte remains, the circular masonry structure featured an aljibe cistern, fountain, and garrison of soldiers and torreros living in nearby barracks.
Partially ruined by the 18th century and later abandoned, its evocative remnants now frame stunning Mediterranean sunrises amid greenhouse-dominated landscapes.
