Torre de la Vela
Granada, Spain, Spain
Torre de la Vela is the highest and northernmost tower in Granada's Alhambra fortress, serving as a key defensive watchtower during the Nasrid dynasty from the 13th century.
Originally called Torre Mayor, its massive 25-meter square structure provided panoramic surveillance over the vega valley and city, with strategic arrow slits and cisterns for sieges.
On January 2, 1492, the Catholic Monarchs raised their banner from its summit to symbolize Granada's conquest, later installing the "Vela" bell rung by wounded soldiers to mark victories, time, and festivals.
