Associated with the powerful Sande lineage tied to the archbishops of Santiago de Compostela, the tall Gothic-style granite tower formed part of a larger fortified complex overlooking the Miño River valley, serving surveillance and control over vital trade routes during turbulent border conflicts.

Though now in ruins with only the prominent tower and adjacent casa señorial remnants surviving, it exemplifies Galician rural military architecture, blending defensive ashlar masonry with residential elements in a scenic riverside setting near prehistoric castros.
