Torre del Catalán
Lepe, Spain, Spain
Torre del Catalán is a 16th-century watchtower near El Terrón in Lepe, Huelva province, Spain, built as part of King Philip II's coastal defense system against Berber pirate raids and corsairs threatening Atlantic trade routes after America's discovery.
Ordered around 1577 following inspections, construction advanced amid delays until certified complete by 1597, featuring a distinctive truncated conical shape on a circular plinth made of masonry, brick, and plaster for signaling across the chain from Gibraltar to Ayamonte.
Overlooking the Río Piedras estuary and Paraje Natural Marismas del Río Piedras y Flecha de Nueva Umbría, this Bien de Interés Cultural monument now offers panoramic views near the Ermita de la Bella and historic El Terrón port.
