Torre del Homenaje
Torres de Albánchez, Spain, Spain
Torre del Homenaje in Torres de Albánchez, Jaén province, Spain, is a sturdy 14th-century square watchtower built with dressed masonry walls and stone-reinforced corners, standing at the heart of the village alongside the church and town hall.
Constructed by Christians after the 1235 Reconquista of nearby Castillo de la Yedra by the Order of Santiago, it anchored a walled enclosure with four solid corner towers added in the 15th century to counter advancing artillery, protecting repopulated lands in the Sierra de Segura frontier.
Declared a historic monument in 1985 and recently restored, this robust survivor symbolizes the town's shift from dispersed Muslim hamlets to a fortified Christian settlement granted town status by Philip II in 1552.
