Torre del Oro
Seville, Spain, Spain
Torre del Oro in Seville, Andalusia, Spain, is a 13th-century Almohad watchtower built around 1220-1221 by order of the city's governor Abù l-Ulà to protect the Guadalquivir River port and shipyards as part of the defensive walls.
Featuring a distinctive dodecagonal stone base, a second tier added by Peter I of Castile in the 14th century, and an 18th-century circular upper section with a golden dome rebuilt after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake, it once connected via chain to a twin tower to block enemy ships.
Repurposed over centuries as chapel, prison, warehouse, and naval headquarters, the iconic 36-meter structure now houses the Naval Museum and symbolizes Seville's maritime heritage with panoramic river views.
