Torre Nazarí de Carteia
San Roque, Spain, Spain
Torre Nazarí de Carteia, also known as Torre Cartagena, is a 13th-century Nasrid watchtower and fortress located at the ancient Carteia archaeological site near San Roque in Cádiz province, Spain.
Built by Muslim forces atop the highest point of the abandoned Roman city of Carteia following a 1275 treaty between the Nasrid Sultan Muhammad II and the Marinid Abu Yusuf, it formed part of a defensive hisn to protect the kingdom's frontiers.
The square-plan structure includes a prominent almenara tower, attached walls, and an albarrana tower, changing hands to Christians after a brief 1342 siege under Alfonso XI of Castile, with documented military use through the 15th century and possibly up to the 19th.
Today, it stands as a protected cultural asset amid the Phoenician-to-Roman ruins of Carteia, highlighting centuries of strategic importance in the Strait of Gibraltar area.
