Torreon de los Osorios
Spain, Spain
The Torreon de los Osorios is a well-preserved 14th-century square tower, the only surviving element of the ancient Castillo de Turgentius, located in Turienzo de los Caballeros within La Maragatería region of León province, Spain.
Originally tied to a possible Asturian or Roman castro, it protected nearby Roman gold mines and later served the Knights Templar in guarding pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago route toward Ponferrada, before becoming the seat of the Osorio family's lordship with its 22-meter height across four floors plus a basement dungeon, robust stone walls, machicolations, and a 15th-century restoration.
Declared a National Monument and Bien de Interés Cultural, it remains privately owned by the Duquesa de Maqueda, open to summer visitors with a guide, and exemplifies rare medieval civil architecture in the area.
