Torup Castle
Sweden, Sweden
Torup Castle, located in Svedala Municipality in Skåne, southern Sweden, near Bara and about 15 kilometers east of Malmö, was built in 1537 by Görvel Fadersdotter Sparre, one of Scandinavia's wealthiest women, as a residence for her young son Nils Ulfstand, who tragically died soon after.
The current Renaissance structure, renovated between 1602 and 1630, features a three-story red brick square with octagonal and round towers, set within a 340-hectare beech forest nature reserve owned by Malmö Municipality since 1970.
Open for limited guided tours, it preserves mixed architectural styles from medieval origins to Arts and Crafts influences amid scenic grounds popular for recreation.
